When I think back over the dozens of training and development programmes I have been through in the 30 odd years since I entered business, I can recall only a handful which had a lasting benefit.

Approach

I now realise the transformational ones were all experiential and tailored to my specific learning style and personal needs. So when I create and lead programmes for senior executives I try to avoid the didactic style, but use a coaching approach, informed by practical experience and acknowledged theory. And although I am no Anthony Robbins or Tom Peters, I am told my delegates find my approach highly motivational as well as informative.

Philosophy

Of the 4 most admired features of the world's most admired leaders, 3 are character traits (honesty, forward looking and inspiring) and the other is competence.  If you are not, by nature, forward looking you are unlikely to make it as a leader. If you are not intrinsically honest, you don't deserve to lead. The ability to inspire and the other key leadership competencies, can however, be taught and coached.

Having personally been entrusted with leadership roles from a tender age, I have learned by my mistakes as much as my successes, been inspired by working with some truly great leaders, and informed by the writings of the world's leading authors on this intriguing subject. My honed down philosophy resulting from all this is...be careful what you wish for, be even more careful about the team you choose to work with, and then ENJOY your gift of leadership.

Experience

From marketing graduate with Pfizer to CEO of Saatchi and Saatchi in 15 thrilling years of growth including integrating several acquisitions, public listing and working with Global clients and Government on business and communications strategy. Thereafter, until I re-trained as a coach, I have been a serial entrepreneur launching, acquiring and selling several companies, mainly in the CRM and Marcomms. industries.

  • Mix of lectern speaking , introduction to models relating to leadership particularly in a small business context, and interactive exercises - for instance to practise their vision statements and get feedback on both content and delivery. Average happy sheet score 9/10.
